Battle of the Books is a competition in which students compete against each other using their understanding of the selected books. In the past year, over 600 teams and 2600 students competed for 1st place in each category.

The purpose of the competition is to promote literacy in the School District of Palm Beach County. Most of the students read all 15 books on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award or Florida Teens Read lists for their level.

The winning teams get to keep the traveling trophies, The Cavanaugh Cups, at their schools until the next Grand Battle. The Cavanaugh Cups are named in honor of Kim Cavanaugh of the the Educational Technology department who was a huge supporter of Battle of the Books.
